Graduate Funding
The History Department awards graduate teaching assistantships that carry stipends and tuition waivers. The Contemporary History Institute has fellowships that it awards to selected graduate students admitted to its program.
University policy sets limits on the duration of funding for graduate students. According to that policy, a graduate student with a graduate degree from another institution (e.g. a Ph.D. student who earned an M.A. elsewhere) can receive a maximum of 10 semesters of tuition support, excluding summers. A graduate student without a graduate degree from another institution (e.g. either an M.A. student or a Ph.D. student with an M.A. from 帝王会所) can receive a maximum of 12 semesters of graduate tuition scholarship.
The History Department's general policy has been to provide an M.A. student with a maximum of four semesters of support and a Ph.D. student with eight semesters of support. Someone who earns both degrees in our department can receive 12 semesters of support. There may be occasions, however, when exceptions are in both the department's interest and the student's. Should the department have funds available and a need for an additional teaching assistant, and should the student benefit from additional support, the department might offer financial support to someone who was previously ineligible. All decisions will be on a case-by-case basis and are, of course, subject to budgetary constraints that can vary considerably from year to year.
History Travel and Research Funds
M.A. and Ph.D. students can apply for funding to support their research.
The Graduate College, in conjunction with the Graduate Student Senate, offers two separate funding programs: Original Work Grants of up to $750 to visit archives, libraries, or other research destinations and Travel Grants to present at conferences or for professional development workshops and seminars.
The University鈥檚 Council on Research, Scholarship & Creative Activity offers competitive Student Enhancement Awards of up to $6,000 for recipients to conduct research and present results at professional meetings.
The History Department offers Lobdell Grants, funded by a generous alumni donor, to support M.A. thesis research specifically. They are awarded in fall and spring cycles and range in amount between $500 and $1,500.
The Contemporary History Institute can also offer discrete grants on a case-by-case basis for various kinds of research trips.
