Minsoo Sung Headshot
Assistant Professor
Stocker Center 223

Minsoo Sung joined the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering in January 2024. He holds a B.S. in Architectural Engineering from Hanyang University, Seoul, South Korea (2016), an M.S. in Civil Engineering (Structures) from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (2017), and a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering (Structures) from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (2023). Sung’s research focuses on a wide range of topics related to socio-resilient infrastructure using smart materials that could be adaptive to natural hazards. During his doctoral research, he developed a novel concrete adaptive prestressing system using multifunctional Shape Memory Alloys (SMAs) and infused the novel prestressing system with topology optimization techniques to minimize carbon emissions, which could help in the sustainability of the structure. His research spans multi-scale infrastructure from small-scale material testing of SMAs, mid-scale component level studies, and large-scale infrastructure field testing. He has served as a committee member of ASCE Retrofit of Structures Under Dynamic Loads.
