Like physicians and attorneys, professional engineers and surveyors in the United States are licensed or registered, unless exempt by the laws of a particular state, because their work affects public welfare, health, and safety.     To attain licensure in engineering or surveying,  individuals must meet statutory educational, experience, and testing requirements.     While educational requirements vary from state to state, it is often the case that individuals who graduate from a program that is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET () satisfy the educational requirements for engineering licensure.      To attain engineering licensure, individuals must also take and pass the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) and Principles and Practices of Engineering (PE).
