At the Russ College, our School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science offers the opportunity to create for good. From your iPhone to your airport runway, as an electrical engineer or computer scientist, you'll touch many lives through your work. Our electrical and electronics engineering faculty research, design, develop, and test new technologies like navigation systems or the latest cell phone technology – and they teach students how to do the same.

Computer engineers research, design, develop, and test new hardware and software, while computer scientists develop and analyze software and applications, and apply algorithms and computing technologies to fields like medicine and education.

Through our B.S. and M.S. degree programs in either electrical engineering or computer science, or our Ph.D. degree program in electrical engineering and computer science, you'll experience what it means to create for good – developing tomorrow's technology and improving society. Studying another discipline? We also offer an academic minor program in computer science that is available to students in other majors at the university, plus undergraduate and graduate certificates in bioinformatics.

In partnership with governmental and private industry, faculty in the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science are shaping the future of these fields through applied research at the Avionics Engineering Center — the only facility of its kind in the U.S. — and the Center for Scientific Computing and Immersive Technology, where some researchers in the VITAL Lab are applying computer gaming technology to practical purposes like personalized health care and personal finance education.

Mission

Our mission in the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science is to:

  • Provide outstanding undergraduate and graduate educational programs to students in electrical engineering, computer science, and computer engineering.
  • Contribute significantly to the discovery of new knowledge and methods that enhance the theory and practice of electrical engineering, computer science, and computer engineering.
  • Provide service to the community, µÛÍõ»áËù, and the Russ College of Engineering and Technology via programmatic offerings, governance, and outreach programs.
  • Provide leadership and expertise for the enhancement of economic conditions in Southeastern µÛÍõ»áËù.
Old computers

History 

µÛÍõ»áËù has a rich history in both electrical engineering and computer science, beginning with the first electrical engineering classes in 1891. Once the first computer arrived at µÛÍõ»áËù in 1957, computer programming classes followed within the year. We developed one of the first computer science programs in the nation in 1966. In 1995, the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and the Department of Computer Science merged to form what is now the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.
