An Interdisciplinary Resource for Creativity, Technology, and Innovation
The CREATE_space is an interdisciplinary hub at 帝王会所, designed to support diverse creative processes and projects. Open to students, faculty, and staff across all disciplines, CREATE_space provides resources for creative research that bridges the arts, technology, and entrepreneurship. We serve undergraduates, graduate and doctoral students, Honors Tutorial College students, faculty, and staff with a wide range of services, and equipment.
Our mission is to foster an environment where innovation and collaboration thrive, supporting the development of contemporary, interdisciplinary, and entrepreneurial ideas. As an integral part of the Chaddock + Morrow College of Fine Arts, the CREATE_space aims to empower the 帝王会所 community by providing cutting-edge tools, training, and support for creative exploration.

We provide a variety of services to meet your project needs, including:
Central Checkout: Borrow digital cameras, audio equipment, and other AV tools for your creative projects.

What to Expect for Your Appointment
- Schedule an appointment
- Fill out all required fields to help staff assist you effectively.
- Bring your university ID and be prepared for the appointment to take up to 30 minutes.
- First-time users will need to complete a registration form to be added to the system.
- You may be asked questions about your equipment needs to ensure the best selection.
- Staff will gather and inspect the equipment to confirm all parts are present and functional. This process takes time.
- You will receive a reminder to schedule a return appointment for the equipment.
- You are responsible for any damage to the equipment you check out.
- DO NOT LOAN EQUIPMENT TO OTHERS. Any damages or missing items will be charged to the original borrower.
Policies
- A university ID is required for all equipment checkouts.
- Outstanding Equipment:
- If you have unreturned equipment from a previous academic year, you cannot check out new equipment until it is returned or renewed.
- Equipment Renewals:
- To renew equipment, you must return all items (including accessories and parts) to CREATE_space for a quality check before renewal.
- Lost or Damaged Equipment:
- Any missing or damaged equipment may result in charges or account holds for the individual who checked it out.
- End-of-Semester Returns:
- All equipment must be returned before the end of the semester to avoid charges or holds on your account.
- Break Period Checkouts:
- Equipment may be checked out over breaks, but must be renewed before the break begins.
- Only returning students, faculty, or staff can renew break-period checkouts.
- Graduating students must return all equipment before leaving.
- Loaning Equipment:
- Do not loan CREATE_space equipment to others. Each borrower is solely responsible for items checked out under their name. Loaning equipment to others is strictly prohibited.
Large-Format Digital Printing: Print high-quality posters, banners, and fine art prints.

- Additional Paper Types:
- CREATE_space offers additional paper types beyond those listed above. If interested, please schedule a consultation appointment.
- Bringing Your Own Paper:
- Users are permitted to bring their own paper for printing. However, not all papers are approved by the manufacturer. If you use personal paper, please schedule a consultation appointment in advance.
File Requirements
- Accepted File Types: TIFF, PSD
- May bring JPG if select 鈥渇irst time printing assistance鈥 when making appointment.
- Color Space: Files must be set to RGB before submission.
- File Submission:
- Files must be brought to CREATE_space on a USB-A flash drive.
- Our computers do not support other port types.
Canvas/Layout Size Guidelines
- Paper Widths:
- Enhanced Matte Paper: 44鈥 or 24鈥 wide
- Premium Photo Paper (Luster): 44鈥 wide
- Transparency Paper: 24鈥 wide
- Canvas/Layout Size Limitations:
- The recommended height should not exceed 60 inches.
- The maximum printable area per image is 44鈥 (width) 脳 60鈥 (height).
- If printing multiple images, they must be formatted on a single canvas/layout that does not exceed 44鈥 脳 60鈥.
Payment Information
- Accepted Payment Methods:
- Credit Card and Debit Card (Paid online through ).
- Instructor e-Market Bundle Funds:
- Instructors with e-Market bundle funds must:
- Provide CREATE_space with a list of students and their allocated funds at least 3 days before the reserved printing session.
- Ensure class printing sessions are preformatted and may include multiple students鈥 works to streamline the process and maximize e-Market funds.
- Students using e-Market bundle funds must:
- Present their university ID at checkout.
- Pay the remaining balance if their print exceeds available funds before leaving.
- Instructors with e-Market bundle funds must:
Current Pricing
- Ink: $0.05 per square inch
- Enhanced Matte Paper: $0.17 per square inch
- Transparency Paper: $0.17 per square inch
- Luster Paper: $0.25 per square inch
What to Expect for Your Appointment
- Schedule an appointment .
- Fill out all required fields to allow staff to prepare equipment in advance.
- Bring your university ID and a payment method (credit/debit card).
- You must pay for your print before leaving. Unpaid prints cannot be taken from CREATE_space.
- Bring your file(s) on a USB-A flash drive.
- Other ports are not available on CREATE_space computers.
- Ensure your image is properly prepared.
- If you are unsure how to prepare your file, refer to "How to Prepare My Images" below.
- If this is your first time printing, select the "first-time printing assistance" option when making your appointment. Staff can teach you how to set up your images.
- File Submission & Printing Process:
- Staff will import your file into Photoshop and prepare it for printing.
- Staff may ask clarifying questions to ensure the best print quality.
- Staff will print your image(s).
- Payment & Receipt Process:
- After printing, you must pay online .
- Staff will calculate the total cost and can email you an invoice if requested.
- You must use your university email to log in for payment.
- Once payment is completed, you will receive an automated email with a receipt number.
- Staff will log the receipt number as proof of payment.
- Drying & Pickup:
- Depending on the image and material, prints may need to dry before trimming.
- You may pick up the print later the same day during open hours without an appointment.
- CREATE_space has paper cutters available for trimming excess paper.
How to Prepare My Images
Step 1: Open Photoshop & Create a New Document
- Open Adobe Photoshop.
- Create a new document with the following settings:
- Width: Set width based on paper selection (44鈥 or 24鈥). See above Canvas/Layout Guidelines.
- Height: Desired image height + 1-inch margin on all sides
- Color Profile: sRGB
- Color Mode: RGB Color
- Resolution: 300 dpi
- Background: White
- Click Create.
Step 2: Import Your Image(s)
- Drag and drop your image(s) onto the Photoshop artboard.
Step 3: Ensure the Image is Correctly Sized
- Verify that the image matches the intended print size.
- Common Issue: Unflattened Images
- If an image appears incorrect, it may not be flattened.
- To check:
- Open the image in Photoshop.
- Flatten the image: Go to Layer > Flatten Image.
- Confirm that it is sized correctly: Go to Image > Image Size.
- If necessary:
- Adjust image orientation to optimize paper use.
- Example: An 8脳10 image should be oriented 8 inches vertical to minimize paper waste.
- Once the image is flattened, save a new file and reimport it into the artboard.
Step 4: Final Save & USB Transfer
- Once all images are imported onto the artboard, center them on the board.
- Save the final file as TIFF or PSD.
- Transfer the file to a USB-A flash drive for submission at CREATE_space.
Laser Cutting: Create precise designs on a variety of materials such as acrylic, wood, and cardboard.

- Plywood & Wood

- Acrylic (Must provide a receipt verifying it is acrylic and not polycarbonate/Lexan.)
- Cardboard
- User-Supplied Materials:
- Users must bring their own materials for the laser cutter.
- It is recommended to bring scrap material for test cuts before finalizing a project.
- Materials must not be warped by more than 1/8鈥, as excessive warping can compromise the focal length and damage the equipment.
File Requirements
- Accepted File Types:
- Vector Files (for cutting & engraving): PDF, SVG, DXF, DWG, PPS, AI
- Raster Files (for engraving only): JPG, PNG
- File Preparation:
- If your project contains multiple layers for different actions (e.g., cutting and engraving), do not flatten your file before submission.
- Files must be brought to CREATE_space staff on a USB-A flash drive.
- CREATE_space staff are not responsible for resizing or modifying files before printing.
Policies
- Maximum Material Size: 24鈥 脳 36鈥 (recommended maximum: 20鈥 脳 32鈥)
- Maximum Cutting Thickness: 3/8鈥 (recommended maximum: 录鈥 or less)
- Material Restrictions:
- Only plywood, wood, paper, cardboard, and acrylic are approved for general use.
- Other materials require a consultation appointment before cutting.
- Prohibited Materials:
- Any material containing chlorine
- Reflective materials
- PVC, vinyl, fiberglass, printed circuit boards
- Resins, carbon fiber, polycarbonate/Lexan, ABS, and all types of foam
Safety Guidelines
- Fumes & Air Quality:
- The CO2 laser vaporizes material which can produce strong odors.
- If you are sensitive to smells, an N95 mask can be provided, or you may wait outside during the cutting process.
- Eye Protection:
- Do not look directly at the emitted light. The laser emits UV rays that can damage eyesight.
- Proper eye protection is available upon request.
- Electrical & Fire Safety:
- Do not touch the machine while it is operating.
- The laser cutter uses high voltage and poses a risk of electric shock.
- Never open the machine while it is running.
- This machine poses a fire risk.
- If a fire occurs, CREATE_space staff are trained to respond.
- If a fire cannot be contained, evacuate the building immediately.
What to Expect for Your Appointment
- Schedule an appointment
- Fill out all required fields so staff can prepare for your session.
- Bring your university ID and expect setup to take up to 15 minutes.
- Material Inspection:
- Give your material to a staff member for inspection.
- If you are using acrylic, provide the receipt proving it is acrylic.
- Bringing extra material (scrap) for test cuts is highly recommended.
- File Submission:
- Provide your file(s) to staff on a USB-A flash drive.
- Files must be sized correctly and prepped for cutting/engraving.
- If your project involves multiple actions (e.g., cutting, engraving at different depths), your file must not be flattened, and each action should be on a separate layer.
- File Processing & Setup:
- Staff will import your file into Lightburn and review your settings with you.
- Staff will discuss potential issues (e.g., overlapping cut/engrave lines) that may affect results.
- Staff may perform test cuts/engravings to calibrate settings.
- Laser Cutting Process:
- Once settings are finalized, staff will:
- Send the final file(s) to the laser cutter.
- Calibrate all settings for accurate cutting/engraving.
- Turn on safety equipment, including:
- Exhaust fan
- Air compressor
- The laser cutter is loud. If you need ear protection, request it from staff.
- Once settings are finalized, staff will:
- Final Quality Check & Pickup:
- When the cut/engraving is complete:
- Staff will partially open the laser door to allow final venting.
- Staff will conduct a quality check.
- If adjustments are needed, the file may need to be re-run.
- Staff will give you your finished piece.
- When the cut/engraving is complete:
- Cleanup & Storage:
- Dispose of waste material in the provided trash receptacle.
- Material Storage (if applicable):
- If you plan to return for additional cuts/engravings, storage space is available.
- All stored materials must be labeled with:
- First and last name
- Contact information
- If you do not plan to return, you must take all materials with you.
3D Printing: Fabricate complex models or prototypes.

Materials
- CREATE_space Provided Filament:
- PLA filament (preferred, available in a variety of colors)
- User-Provided Filament:
- Users may bring their own filament.
- Only filaments approved by Bambu Labs for the Bambu P1S 3D Printer are allowed.
- Users must provide proof of filament type and manufacturer approval from Bambu Labs before printing.
File Requirements
- Accepted File Types: STL or OBJ
- File Submission:
- Files must be brought to CREATE_space on a USB-A flash drive.
- Other ports are not available on CREATE_space computers.
Policies
- Maximum Print Size: 10鈥 脳 10鈥 脳 10鈥
- Print Duration Limitations:
- Prints must be completed within CREATE_space open hours.
- For medium to large prints, it is recommended to reserve morning slots.
- If a larger print is needed, schedule a consultation appointment before reserving time.
- Supervised Printing Requirement:
- All prints must be monitored for their entire duration.
- Users must sit with their print or arrange for someone to monitor it.
- Unattended prints will result in immediate revocation of access to CREATE_space equipment.
What to Expect for Your Appointment
- Schedule an appointment
- Fill out all required fields to help staff assist you effectively.
- Bring your university ID and expect the setup process to take up to 30 minutes.
- Be prepared to monitor your print for the entire duration.
- Staff will explain how to monitor prints and what to do in case of print failure.
- Bring your file(s) on a USB-A flash drive in STL or OBJ format.
- Staff will import your file into Bambu Studio to prepare it for printing.
- Staff may ask clarifying questions about your print settings (e.g., print quality, material selection).
- Print Scheduling:
- Staff will provide an estimated print time.
- You will determine if you can stay for the entire print or reschedule for a later time.
- Print Execution:
- If printing the same day, staff will:
- Load the file and filament into the Bambu P1S printer.
- Turn on necessary safety equipment.
- Begin the print process.
- If printing the same day, staff will:
- Print Monitoring:
- Staff will observe the initial portion of the print to ensure proper adhesion and quality.
- Staff will instruct you on how to monitor the print and when to seek assistance if issues arise.
- Staff remains on-site and available for any concerns.
- User Print Responsibility:
- Users must actively monitor their print.
- Unattended prints may cause printer damage or fire hazards.
- Failure to monitor a print will result in immediate revocation of CREATE_space access.
- Completion & Pickup:
- Once the print is finished and the build plate has cooled, staff will remove the print and hand it to you.
