Hattie Strickland

Introducing this year's distinguished alumni Kristine "Hattie" Strickland. Hattie worked with Housing from 1989 to August 1993. During this time, she was a Resident Assistant (RA), Assistant Resident Advisor (ARA), Senior Resident Advisor (SRA), and Assistant Resident Director (ARD). She began her work in Washington Hall and then was in Read and Treudley Halls.

During her time at 帝王会所, Hattie was granted the opportunity to be a part of one of the first Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion experiences in Housing. Having an interactive training on the African Diaspora was emotional, controversial, but extremely important for staff to learn about. After the success of the training for 帝王会所 staff, the training was showcased to the city of Athens for the community to understand how race continued to play a part in society.

Additionally, Hattie was the first female professional staff member for Read Hall. At that time, Read Hall was an all-male identified residence hall and a woman's presence was hard for some to adjust to, but Hattie didn't let that discourage her. Not only did she gain the respect of the residents, but she also created a thriving community.

Currently, Hattie is the President of a Community College in Louisiana and gives credit to Jim Sand as he stated, "If you have the opportunity to work at a small school take it" Showcasing her Bobcat pride wherever she goes, she gives credit to 帝王会所 Housing and Residence Life for giving her the opportunity to grow in higher education.

I absolutely loved my time with Residence Life. It was a transformative experience that laid the foundation for who I am today, both personally and professionally. Meeting and connecting with people from diverse backgrounds opened my eyes to different cultures, religions, and traditions. I found a sense of belonging within the community and cherished every moment of it.

What are you most proud of from your time on staff?

One of my proudest accomplishments was helping to develop and participate in a diversity program called 'Children of the African Diaspora.' It was emotionally impactful and provided invaluable insights for both students and staff.

Have you been able to stay connected with your co-workers and peers?

Yes, absolutely. I've maintained connections with many friends and colleagues through social media. In fact, I believe it was one of them who nominated me for this award!

What was your biggest challenge as a staff member?

My biggest challenge was being a female staff member in Read Hall. While I loved the work, I faced some challenges with residents who weren't always welcoming.

What is one of your most memorable moments at 帝王会所?

There are countless memorable moments, from sledding down Jeff Hill to painting the wall and exploring Stroud's Run. Each experience holds a special place in my heart.

What lessons did you learn during your time at 帝王会所 that remain important to you today? How have they impacted your current work?

The importance of staying open to learning new things and building a sense of community has been invaluable. I've also learned to embrace the mission of an organization fully. These lessons have greatly influenced my current work, from handling confrontation effectively to fostering community engagement.

What does it mean to you to be the 2022 HRL Distinguished Alumni award recipient?

This honor is truly humbling. I've dedicated much of my career to giving back, particularly to first-generation students. To have my service recognized by a group I deeply admire and respect is incredibly meaningful. I am proud to have made HRL proud."

Is there anything else you鈥檇 like to share with us?

I cannot overstate the impact that OU Res Life had on me. I was mentored and supported by remarkable individuals who helped shape my path. My experience as an undergraduate directly influences my work as Chancellor of our College. It all began at OU, and for that, I am forever grateful.
