Tips for Travelers

This guide from OGO covers the basics many traveler's have asked our office, including Packing, Booking Flights, and some reminders about Money/Power Adapters when abroad.

 

Are you a U.S. Citizen who needs to apply or renew their passport? This link takes you to the U.S. Department of State's passport wizard, which will help you calculate costs of applying/renewing your passport and allow you to begin the application process online. 

Visas

This guide from OGO provides a brief overview of visas that may be needed to gain entry into your destination of choice, and outlines how OGO can assist you with this process. Note: OGO staff members are not visa experts and may only have limited information regarding how to apply for your visa. For the most up-to-date information, you will need to check consular websites based on your passport/host country. 

The Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) is a service provided by the U.S. department of state that allows U.S. citizens and nationals to enroll their trip with the U.S. Embassy or Consulate nearest their destination(s). This allows for enrolled travelers to receive alerts and notifications for their destination(s). Non-U.S. Citizens are encouraged to check with their home country's embassy to see if a similar registration service is offered. 

All participants traveling on a program with the Office of Global Opportunities are required to register their travel with the Embassy or Consulate of their host country prior to departure. 

The CIA World Factbook is a great place to start researching your travel destination. This resource "provides information on the history, people and society, government, economy, energy, geography, communications, transportation, military, and transnational issues for 267 world entities." 

Cyber theft of personal information is increasing around the world and travelers typically place themselves at a greater risk of being victimized without even knowing it. Below are two guides which provide some great tips/best practices to prepare for international travel and minimize your risks of becoming a victim of identity theft/fraud while abroad.
