Program Educational Objectives

Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering

The Civil Engineering program seeks to prepare graduates, who, after the first few years of their professional career have:

  1. Advanced their knowledge base;
  2. Developed leadership skills necessary to assume progressively more responsible roles in their professions;
  3. Exhibited effective communication skills necessary to interact in a diverse professional environment; and
  4. Employed modern engineering and computational tools.

Master of Science in Civil Engineering

The mission of the MSCE Program is to prepare graduates to successfully apply the principles of Civil Engineering and to advance their knowledge base. The MS program is designed to prepare graduates for a higher level of professional ability through coursework and a research project or thesis (supported students are normally required to complete a thesis). Graduates will be prepared to enter a Ph.D. program in Civil Engineering or enter professional practice in their recognized specialty. They will develop management skills necessary to assume progressively more responsible roles in their profession; begin to develop and exhibit leadership skills; exhibit effective communication skills necessary to interact in a diverse professional environment; employ state-of-the-practice engineering and computational tools; and continue to act in a professional and ethical manner.

Doctorate of Civil Engineering

The Ph.D. candidate is challenged to become a leading expert in his/her research area, become competent in applying the scientific method to the discovery of engineering principles, be able to design and execute experiments, teach, demonstrate the ability to independently direct research, become conversant in the body of literature, and be able to defend his/her research work, which will stand as a significant and unique contribution to the body of civil engineering knowledge.
