Spanish M.A. Graduate Admissions

Admission Requirements

Admission requires a completed bachelor鈥檚 degree from a regionally accredited institution or graduation from a foreign institution with a degree that is equivalent to a U.S. bachelor鈥檚 degree (for example traductorados and profesorados are considered equivalent).

The following application materials all must be submitted online prior to Jan. 15 for priority consideration:

  • Online application form along with a nonrefundable application fee submitted to the Graduate College via the following link: .
  • Official transcripts and diplomas from post-secondary schools:
    • Students can upload a copy of their transcript, marksheets, diploma and/or degree certificates with their online application, but they also must submit official copies by mail. An official transcript is one that arrives in an envelope that has been sealed by the issuing institution.
    • If these documents are not in English, students will need a certified translation into English.
  • English Proficiency: The Modern Languages Department has English proficiency requirements that are higher than the minimum university requirements. Please review information about 帝王会所鈥檚 English Language Proficiency requirements. The minimum for the M.A. in Spanish is: 
    • TOEFL required scores: a minimum of 80 on the Internet based exam with all section scores at least a 17 and a speaking score of 24 to be considered for an assistantship. 
    • IELTS required scores: a composite score of 6.0 with a speaking score of 7.0 and at least a 6.0 on all bands.
  • Three letters of recommendation (preferably from professors who can comment on students鈥 academic performance).  A letter from an employer is also very valuable.
  • A written statement of purpose in either English or Spanish. We recommend that candidates search information regarding 鈥渉ow to write a statement of purpose.鈥
  • An essay response in the language not chosen above to: Describe an episode in your life where you needed to show leadership qualities, and explain how you grew from the experience.
  • After initial review of applications, the graduate committee will schedule an interview (on Microsoft Teams or Zoom) with the strongest candidates.

Timeline

  • Review of application materials begins on Jan. 15 or whenever an application is complete, whichever comes sooner.
  • Pre-selection is completed no later than the end of February when pre-selected candidates are notified and a virtual interview is scheduled.
  • Interviews are conducted before mid-March
  • After admission and/or receipt of an assistantship offer, applicants may accept at any time through April 15.

This timeline is somewhat flexible and subject to change. We might be able to consider applications submitted after Jan. 15.
