Admission Requirements

All graduate applications must be submitted electronically through the Graduate College.

  • A bachelor's degree in Mathematics or closely related field with minimum grade point average (GPA) 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale).
  • Core undergraduate mathematics coursework such as single and multi-variable calculus, linear algebra, ordinary differential equations, and introductory statistics.
  • Upper level undergraduate mathematics coursework. No specific courses are required, but students need to demonstrate that they can succeed at courses at this level, including proof-based courses. A good model of courses to take is the Mathematics Major (B.S.) (BS3101) here.
  • For students applying to the Computational M.S. track, the department also requires: Core undergraduate computer science coursework, such as Discrete Structures, Organization of Programming Languages, and Data Structures.
  • For students applying to the doctoral program, the department requires Post-Bachelors study equivalent to a master's degree; applicants who do not have such experience will be diverted to the master's program. Applicants must have at least B+ (3.3 / 4) grade point average (GPA) in the master's degree.
  • Three reference letters. These letters should both address your past performance and assess your potential for success at graduate study in Mathematics.
  • A statement of purpose. Explain why you want to study mathematics and your long-term goals. Indicate your areas of interest and any connections with particular faculty members here. Include any other information about you that you wish us to know and is not apparent from your transcripts or other materials.
  • The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is optional, but applicants are encouraged to submit their GRE scores if available. (Use code 1593 for 帝王会所 and 0703 for Mathematics.) GRE scores are particularly useful if they indicate better ability than is apparent from your transcripts.
  • English Proficiency. All non-native English speakers must demonstrate English proficiency by submitting official test scores for either the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS academic). To be considered official, test scores must be reported directly from the testing agency to 帝王会所. For unconditional admission with eligibility for funding, a TOEFL-iBT of 80 Composite, all section scores of 17, or IELTS of 6.5 Composite, all bands 6.5 is required.
