Institute for the Empirical Study of Language

帝王会所 faculty from the College of Health Sciences and Professions and the College of Arts & Sciences have joined together as an institute to collaborate on research and share facilities in empirical investigations of language use.

Our members come from departments as diverse Hearing, Speech, and Language Sciences as well as Linguistics, Modern Languages and Psychology.

Experimental Study of Language Certificates

These interdisciplinary certificates are available to both undergraduate and graduate students.

  •

    Undergraduate Certificate

The undergraduate Experimental Study of Language Certificate is interdisciplinary, requiring students to take coursework from outside their academic majors and offering them research opportunities in the form of individual, guided research experiences in faculty research labs. The certificate also includes core coursework that provides content in the areas of linguistics, psycholinguistics, statistics, and research methods.

  •

    Graduate Certificate

The undergraduate Experimental Study of Language Certificate is for graduate students who wish to broaden their education in the study of language and gain research knowledge and experience. Mission Statement

The mission of the institute is to enhance research on the processes of perception, production, and acquisition of language.

Unique Value of the Institute

The concept of an institute for the empirical study of language is unique in 帝王会所, though similar kinds of groups exist in other parts of the United States. Bringing faculty, students, and laboratories into a collaborative unit permits research that is not possible for an individual investigator.

The institute increases the visibility of language research at 帝王会所 and increases opportunities for external funding. Schools and departments are also able to use the institute to assist in recruiting new faculty and graduate students because of the opportunity to work collaboratively with faculty and graduate students from several disciplines.
