From the smoky clubs of New York to the grand concert halls of Europe, jazz has always been a music of movement鈥攐f pushing boundaries and carrying traditions forward.

On April 4, that movement finds its way to , where the Tim Warfield Quartet will bring its dynamic blend of bebop roots and contemporary innovation to Bowman Auditorium. This special performance, featuring Warfield and a lineup of celebrated musicians, is more than a concert鈥攊t鈥檚 a vibrant tribute to jazz鈥檚 enduring influence and an invitation to experience its timeless energy firsthand.

Presented in collaboration with Jazz Alive and the , the performance is part of a regional celebration of Jazz Appreciation Month, an initiative designed to highlight the significance of jazz as a uniquely American art form. Warfield, a celebrated tenor saxophonist with an impressive resume that spans decades, will bring his signature blend of bebop tradition and contemporary artistry to Ironton alongside pianist Dan Karlsberg, bassist Justin Dawson and drummer Phillip Tipton.

Warfield, a Pennsylvania native, first turned heads in the jazz world as a member of Jazz Futures, an international touring group assembled by George Wein to spotlight the next generation of jazz luminaries. Over the years, he has played alongside Christian McBride, Nicholas Payton and Terell Stafford, earning accolades for his tenacity and technical prowess. With ten albums under his belt and a reputation for performances that balance sophistication with soul, Warfield continues to be a powerful force in the genre.

His quartet, featuring some of the most seasoned and dynamic musicians in the industry, promises an evening of rich improvisation, intricate harmonies and deeply rooted tradition. Karlsberg, an accomplished pianist based in Cincinnati, brings a nuanced touch and an ear for elegant melodic structures. Dawson, a Dayton-born bassist known for his versatility across jazz, funk and R&B, lays down a groove that seamlessly supports and elevates the ensemble. Tipton, whose drumming career has seen collaborations with jazz greats like Curtis Fuller and Mulgrew Miller, is a master of dynamic expression, infusing each piece with energy and precision.

But the impact of the quartet鈥檚 visit extends beyond the stage. As part of Jazz Alive鈥檚 commitment to education and outreach, the musicians will conduct workshops with students across 帝王会所 and Kentucky, offering young musicians an opportunity to learn from professionals who have dedicated their lives to the craft. Jazz Alive, a nonprofit organization based in Cincinnati, is devoted to ensuring the vitality of jazz through performance and education, bridging generational and cultural gaps through music.

The event is made possible by a POWER Grant from the in collaboration with the Lawrence Economic Development Corporation. This funding supports initiatives that celebrate the region鈥檚 rich cultural history while fostering economic growth through the arts. In addition to bringing world-class performances to Appalachian communities, the grant helps support the , a multi-state project dedicated to documenting Underground Railroad sites and promoting heritage tourism.

For one night, the walls of Bowman Auditorium will reverberate with the echoes of saxophone solos, the steady pulse of upright bass and the intricate interplay of piano and percussion. The Tim Warfield Quartet鈥檚 performance is a celebration of jazz鈥檚 past, present and future, brought to life in Lawrence County.
