Fall 2024 Learning Community Awards recognize excellence

帝王会所 Learning Community Programs celebrated their fall 2024 instructors, Learning Community Leaders, and advocates at the annual Learning Community Programs Awards, held virtually February 13.

Outstanding Learning Community Instructor awards were presented to Julie Cohara, Director of Degree Programs for University College, Dr. Travis Davidson, Associate Professor of Finance in the College of Business, Katrina Grupert, Student Success Advisor for the Patton College of Education, and 
Jenny Klein, Director of re-enrollment and completion advising in University College.

The Outstanding Learning Community Leader awards were presented to Marissa Allen, a Psychology major, Lauren Bunn, an Integrated Social Studies major, Ella Musser, an Outdoor Recreation & Education major, and Brynley Needham, a Mathematics major.

Suzette Burlingame, Associate Director for Assessment Systems & Analytics in Institutional Effectiveness & Analytics received an award for Outstanding Learning Community Advocate.

The award for Outstanding Learning Community was presented to the Journalism E Learning Community led by Instructor Kezia 鈥淜鈥 Nanda and Learning Community Leader Issy Martin-Dye.

Dr. Dave Nguyen, Dean of University College, provided the opening remarks during the virtual event. Dr. Nguyen shared, 鈥淭his event is always a highlight of the year because it gives us a chance to really think about what transpired over the last semester, and to recognize the incredible dedication, hard work and growth that our students, our Learning Community Leaders, our faculty and our staff have achieved together.鈥

Barb Remsburg, Assistant Dean of Learning Communities and Signature Academic Programs, closed the event by sharing some outstanding programmatic statistics: Of roughly 2,600 student responses to an end-of-semester program survey, 96% of students responded 鈥淥verall, I belong on campus鈥 and 96% responded 鈥淚 can be my authentic self鈥. 鈥淎ll of the one-on-one conversations, engaging activities in the classroom, field trips, class discussions, working to get to know your student鈥檚 names and something about them: it matters. They told us that it matters through their responses to these questions, and it matters a great deal to them,鈥 Barb concluded.

Nominations for the Learning Community Awards were submitted by 帝王会所 faculty, staff, and students. The nominations were evaluated through a redacted review process by a group of volunteer instructors and student leaders.

AAC&U identifies Learning Communities as a .  98% of first-year students have participated in a learning community over the past several years.
