As part of the ongoing Canvas LMS implementation project, Blackboard LMS retirement is now in progress. This transition marks a key milestone in providing an enhanced, singular learning management system (LMS) experience for students, faculty and staff.
Timeline for Blackboard retirement
End of instruction in Blackboard
- Canvas will be the default LMS for OHIO courses beginning in Summer 2025.
- Courses will only be loaded into Canvas, and to streamline the student experience, OIT will collaborate with UCM to remove references to Blackboard from OHIO web pages.
- Note: OIT will work independently with instructors whose departments or colleges have approved a transition plan to leverage Blackboard for a consecutive term.
Deadline to save Blackboard content
- All Blackboard content will be deleted by June 2026 and archived through June 2028 for student information purposes.
- Please start reviewing your Blackboard content now to determine what content to , , or from Blackboard. It is particularly important to delete any unneeded content to help manage the costs associated with storing unnecessary data.
- Nonacademic content such as Blackboard organizations and other manually created courses will be deleted from Blackboard in June 2026 and will not be archived.
Support and resources are available to assist with content migration and deletion. Visit the Blackboard retirement page for detailed guidance and answers to frequently asked questions.
