About the Human Resources Certificate program and the student group
The Human Resources certificate provides students with numerous skills to succeed. It focuses on developing applied skills and readiness for entry-level human resources professional employment. Students embark on hands-on experiences, focusing on consulting and recruiting for live clients. Those who partake will be better equipped and qualified for student jobs, internships, and full-time jobs. Students will gain the advantage of engaging with real-life HR professionals through networking opportunities. The program also includes a formal mentorship program that is Individualized, providing support. Assessments, workshops, conferences, and competitions allow students to tune into learning more deeply. The certificate assures students a professional headshot to help them succeed. There is also alumni and executive engagement, providing students with the opportunities to engage with fellow bobcats.
Experiential learning in classrooms is implemented in MGT 3300. Students receive firsthand experiential learning by working with a live client. In the course, students recruit and onboard for open positions. Students also attend orientation, are led by executives, and participate in facility tours to understand the benefits and policies. Students present their outcomes and learnings to the top executives at the end of the semester. They also advise them on strategies to focus on in the future. You can read more about students participating in this experiential learning program in this OHIO News article.
Certificate graduates will know HR competencies that lead to success in all careers. They will become proficient in consultation, relationship management, communication, leadership and navigation, global and cultural effectiveness, critical evaluation, business acumen, HR expertise, and ethical practice. If you want to leverage human capital, inspire better workplaces, or get behind a recruiter's mind, the program is here to help you manifest your dreams and make them happen. Certificate graduates will understand business strategy, be equipped to determine appropriate human resource management strategies and practices to deliver results, and be capable of improving organizational health and longevity. Human resources provide opportunities to succeed in various careers: talent acquisition, employee relations, talent management, labor relations, compensation and benefits, training and development, human resources management, and more.
Students must take four courses, Human Resource Management, Organizational Behavior, Employment Law, Strategic Talent Management, and one HR-related elective. Students attend one workshop each semester and help with one recruiting event. This is a selective program that has a rolling cycle for recruitment. Students must have a 3.2 GPA and apply online.
Students who are interested in HR but don't want to study it formally also have an opportunity. The SHRM offers insight into how to positively impact the workplace, increase knowledge in HR insight and understand their rights as an employee. Students meet bi-weekly on Mondays at 7 p.m. in Copeland 118. The SHRM is open to all majors and colleges; the next meeting is Nov. 7. For more information, contact ohiouniversityshrm@gmail.com.
