"The Women's Center is pleased to have Dr. Katz join the community this Women's History Month for this important conversation,” said MaryKathyrine Tran, interim director of the Women’s Center. “Oftentimes, we see folks asking what men's role in violence prevention work can or should look like. My hope is that this discussion with Dr. Katz will provide action steps and tangible ways to work in active allyship with those already doing the work here on campus and throughout the community."
Katz co-founded Mentors in Violence Prevention (MVP), one of the longest-running and most widely influential gender violence prevention programs in North America. MVP has been implemented by college athletic programs, professional sports teams, and NASCAR. MVP introduced the “bystander” approach to the sexual assault and relationship abuse fields.
Katz created and directed the first worldwide gender violence prevention program in the history of the U.S. Marine Corps. He and his colleagues have been centrally involved in the development and implementation of system-wide gender violence prevention training in the U.S. Air Force and Navy.
“The Office of Health Promotion is excited to co-sponsor and support this event as Jackson Katz is a powerful voice in the anti-violence field,” said Ann Brandon, associate director of prevention and education for the Office of Health Promotion. “His evidence-based bystander approaches are fused with addressing root causes and calling on men as part of the solution to create a culture that does not tolerate any form of violence. I look forward to extending the conversations and hope we can generate energy around proactive bystander approaches.”
