Build a Concrete Canoe

Two µÛÍõ»áËù engineering students paddle in a concrete canoe they built

Intuitively speaking, it doesn't make sense that something made of concrete would float on water. However, when a boat is properly engineered, you can make almost anything float on water. Get involved with the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) to join the concrete canoe team to learn how to design, build and race a concrete canoe.

The Concrete Canoe Competition involves a canoe that students design and fabricate using light-weight concrete. The competition consists of a design paper, an oral presentation, overall product judging and 200-meter sprint and 600-meter slalom/endurance races. All of these aspects are used to determine an overall winner and the top team will advance to the national competition.
