Mechanical and Systems Engineering Ph.D. Program
帝王会所's Mechanical and Systems Engineering Ph.D. program is an interdisciplinary program with specialized tracks in Mechanical Engineering (ME) and Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISE). The program prepares students for advanced engineering work in industry, government or academia.
Through the ME track, you'll have the opportunity to specialize your research in the areas of biomedical engineering, CAD/CAM, machine and automotive design, energy, manufacturing, materials and deformable solid body mechanics, robotics and rigid body mechanics and thermo-fluid systems.
Through the ISE, you'll have the ability to specialize in manufacturing systems, information systems, artificial intelligence, systems simulation, process planning, distribution systems, genetic algorithms, data mining, location science, supply chain design, human factors and reliability.
Admission Requirements
The basic requirement for admission to OHIO's Mechanical and Systems Engineering Ph.D. program is a master of science degree in engineering or related field (i.e. chemistry, physics, applied mathematics, etc.). However, direct admission to the program may be possible if special circumstances are met and granted.
Applicants with a GRE quantitative score in the 80th percentile or better may be entitled to a waiver of the application fee. Contact graduate chair Dr. Muhammad Ali at alim1@ohio.edu to request the fee waiver code to use with your online application.
Additional Requirements
- The Graduate Record Exam (GRE) general test is required for all applicants (quantitative score of at least 161 and 153 for verbal).
- The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS) with a score that meets minimum University requirement is required for applicants whose native language is not English.
- Students with English proficiency scores lower than the University requirements for funding eligibility may gain funding eligibility by successfully completing the recommended University English language improvement course.
- The requirement for minimum undergraduate grade point average (GPA) is 3.0, and the minimum M.S. GPA requirement is 3.3.
- Three letters of recommendation are required from persons who can attest to the applicant鈥檚 academic and research aptitude.
- Admission is restricted to those students whose educational plans fall within one of the two specialty areas.
International Students
This program permits full-time enrollment in residence at 帝王会所, and an I-20 may be issued based on admission to this program.

Course Requirements
A minimum of 60 semester hours beyond the Master of Science (M.S.) degree or 90 hours beyond the Bachelors of Science (B.S.) is required consisting of coursework at the 6000 and 7000 level. Additionally, students must pass the qualifying examination before earning 12 credit hours of coursework applicable toward the Ph.D. degree, and a comprehensive examination no later than the end of four semesters of coursework.
