Hazardous Waste Disposal Policy

The 帝王会所 Office of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) offers a university- wide semiannual pickup of hazardous chemicals. In PBIO, pickup coordination at the department level is a service provided by the lab coordinator. Proper disposal of hazardous chemicals requires close communication between department faculty, the lab coordinator, the department chemical hygiene officer, and EHS.

Laboratory Coordinator Responsibilities

  • properly dispose of all chemical/hazardous waste generated in the stockroom and teaching labs (rooms 300, 301, 302, 303, 304, 305)
  • coordinate with EHS for correct pickup dates and disposal procedures, and
  • obtain numbered 鈥淗azardous Waste Labels鈥 required for each container
  • inform faculty of deadline by which all chemical/hazardous waste should be delivered to the appropriate stockroom
  • consolidate and package all materials in accordance with EHS procedures; apply appropriate 鈥淗azardous Waste Labels鈥; and oversee final pickup by EHS

Faculty Responsibilities

  • dispose of chemicals MSDS sheets indicate are not hazardous at low concentrations by pouring them down a sink drain with copious amounts of water
  • complete sections 1 through 5 of the university 鈥淐hemical Waste Disposal Request鈥 (11/7/00) form, except for the 鈥淗azardous Waste Label鈥 number mentioned in section 1, which will be provided by the lab coordinator. Faculty are asked to take on the responsibility of completing the 鈥淐hemical Waste Disposal Request鈥 form because faculty are the best judges of the hazardous nature of chemicals they use and because they have the appropriate MSDS sheets needed to complete the forms. Please note that a separate form is required for each chemical because chemicals are consolidated for shipping according to their properties, not their source.
