Professional Staff Procedure for Teaching

The College of Business is fortunate to have a wide array of talented staff members with capabilities to contribute through the classroom. The following is the professional staff procedure for being granted approval to teach.

Supervisor Approval

For every semester a professional staff member has the opportunity to teach a COB/UCC course, official approval must be granted by their supervisor prior to committing. The staff member is responsible for developing a plan to cover their day-to-day responsibilities before or after normal business hours. It is strongly encouraged that staff members teach no more than one course per semester (unless teaching a course is a part of their job description) and when possible, the class is taught outside of normal university business hours. When the course is taught during normal business hours, compensation is reduced – see below. No additional compensation is provided when a course load is a component of a staff member’s job description.

Departmental Approval

The department chair/director must ensure that the professional staff member has the appropriate academic credentials and/or experience per accreditation standards for the course. The chair/director will also evaluate the course at the end of the semester, providing the staff member and their supervisor with relevant feedback. For UC courses, this process is handled through the Dean’s office.

Pay Scales for COB Classes (as of February 2022)

  • Staff with Masters or Ph.D.
      • Outside normal business hours: See Undergraduate Pay Policy
      • During normal business hours: 50% of the rate for outside normal business hours
  • Pay outside of the COB is determined by the appropriate college

Key Considerations

  • Teaching cannot fundamentally change the staff member’s responsibilities to the college
  • The chairs/directors determine the need for staff in the classroom based on faculty capacity
  • Course assessment is critical to ensuring learning outcomes are being met and the classroom experience is positive for the students
