Develop competences for your career in the banking and financial services industry
The Banking and Financial Services Certificate Program incorporates the economic foundation for the role of the banking industry as well as practical, hands-on applications and skills needed for success in a banking career. The program will develop competencies and applied skills necessary for success and advancement in the banking industry.
Certificate graduates will understand the distinct characteristics of the banking industry, including asset and liability management, regulation and compliance, credit analysis, risk management, customer service and sales, ethics, and innovation. Thus, they’ll be prepared to capitalize on faster than average job growth opportunities within the industry (see table in Growing Demand section of this page).
All µÛÍõ»áËù undergraduate students are invited to pursue this certificate. Interested College of Business students can tailor their education to deepen their preparation for a career in the financial services industry. Non-COB students can broaden their education and attain an industry-specific application of their complementary skills.
The courses will include coverage of: (1) the role that bank services play in the economy; (2) a practical knowledge of risk management tools used to improve bank performance; (3) the legal and ethical implications of the banking industry; (4) a foundational understanding of financial assets and financial institutions with which a bank may interact; (5) skills needed to market financial services to better serve the customer.
Courses in Banking and Financial Services Certificate
Core Courses (12 credit hours)
All students complete the following three courses:
- MKT 3580 – Foundations of Professional Sales
- FIN 3270 – Financial Markets and Institutions
- FIN 4280 – Bank Management
Complete one of following courses:
- FIN 4290 – Advanced Bank Management
- FIN 3310 – Risk and Insurance
Elective Course (3 credit hours)
Complete one of the following courses:
- REAL 1010 – Real Estate Principles and Practices
- ITS 2010 – Understanding Internet Technology
- MGT 2590 – Strategic Leadership Onboarding
- MGT 3300 – Human Resource Management
- MKT 4200 – Services Marketing
Admissions Requirements
- Submit your resume (to demonstrate your strong work ethic, previous bank experience or course work, leadership positions, etc.) and a copy of your most recent DARS to verify your 2.75 or higher GPA to Travis Davidson in the COB's Finance Department.
- Completion of interview, if requested, with Finance Department faculty
Admission into the Banking and Financial Services Certificate Program is expected to be competitive, thus, admission cannot be guaranteed to all students meeting the criteria.
Growing Demand
The banking industry continues to expand and innovate and directly employs more than two billion people in the United States. Succession planning has become critical for operations as banks attempt to find motivated individuals with a mix of hard and soft skills and an understanding of the unique attributes of the industry.
Further demand for educated talent comes indirectly from state and federal bank regulators and from the myriad of bank vendors and service providers. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics indicates healthy employment and salary data for banking related positions.
